What “high-functioning” anxiety actually costs you

You make the deadlines. You answer the texts. From the outside, nothing looks wrong, which is exactly why nobody asks if something is. High-functioning anxiety hides inside competence, and the bill arrives later: sleep, patience, the ability to sit still without a task in your hand.
In session, I often start with one question: what would you do with a free hour if nobody could see you spend it? People who carry high-functioning anxiety often can’t answer. Rest has to be earned, the bar for “earned” keeps moving, and the ledger never quite balances.
The costs that don’t show up at work
The first casualty is often sleep, and specifically staying asleep. Two or three in the morning is when the audit runs: the email you sent at 4:58, the thing you said in the meeting, the three better versions of both that you’ll never get to send. You wake up tired and call it normal, because it has been for years.
